Who are the 3 gods of Rath Yatra?
The Divine Trio of the Ratha Yatra
Three major deities are at the center of the Jagannatha Ratha Yatra, each with his own grand chariot:
-
Lord Jagannath: The Lord of the Universe, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu or Krishna. His chariot, known as Nandighosa, is the biggest and most central, draped in red and yellow coverings. His distinctive form represents that the Divine is within reach of everyone even in what may seem to be an "unfinished" state.
-
Lord Balabhadra: Elder brother of Lord Jagannath, symbolizing strength and religious enjoyment. His chariot, Taladhwaja, has red and bluish-green coverings and is led first in the procession.
-
Devi Subhadra: Sister of Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra, symbolizing good fortune and well-being. Her chariot, Darpadalana, is covered in red and black. The pulling of these majestic chariots is regarded as extremely meritorious. Followers feel that by merely catching a glimpse of the Lord on His chariot, by touching the ropes, or by joining the procession, one can purify oneself of karmic responses and gain on the path towards enlightenment. It is a festival of togetherness, where people of all strata of life unite in a spirit of devotion.
